Do We Still Need Zoos?
Zoos were originally set up so that people could see and learn about wild animals from distand lands. As more people become city-dwellers, never seeing animal in the wild, zoos began to house local creatures too. However, in today’s world, are zoos really necessary?
Since people can now see any sort of wild animals in its natural hábitat, simply by tuning it to a TV programo r buying a video, some animals right activists claim the zoos are are out of date. They argue that it is cruel to capture animals, transport them long distances, and then keep them caged up, simply for the entertainment of the human beings. Captive animals often develop ‘zoochosis’ abnormal behaviour like rocking or swaying-which indicates that they are bored and unhappy in their prison-like conditions.
On the other hand, there is a huge difference between watching animals on screen and seeing it in real life. It could be argued that visiting zoo is educational, often increasing people’s concern for wildlife and conservation, which is of great importance in today’s developing and overdeveloped-word. Indeed, sometimes the only way to save endangered species may be to arrange for it to breed in captivity. Behind the scene, zoos also provide scientists with opportunities to research into animal behaviour. Modern zoos can also be better planed than old-fashioned ones, providing animals with carefully designed enclosures appropriate to their needs.
It seems then, that there are still arguments for retaining zoos. These should, however, be carefully planed with animals’ welfare in mind: in the modern worlds, there is no excuse for keeping the animals in cramped or cruel conditions.

A Book Review
Laskar Pelangi is the first novel of Andrea Hirata. The story takes place in a tin island named Pulau Belitong, the place where the author was born. It is told in the story that the island is very beautiful and rich of tins. When the rain falls, you will easily find a rainbow from the sun that shines through the rain.
Laskar Pelangi is a great writing that tells about a boy with curly hair named “Ikal” who lives in a very poor condition. Nevertheles, Ikal’s father sends him to a village school which is very poor as well.
Guided by Bu Muslimah, Ikal and his nine classmates (Mahar, Lintang, Trapani, Sahara, Samson, Kucai, Syahdan, Harun, and A Kiong) have to work hard, both for school and for life. Not only learn about school subjects, but they also learn about goal-seeking from Bu Muslimah. They do a lot of unthinkable things and enjoy their daily school life through in very limited facilities. You will find these all described in the most part of this novel.
Ikal and his school friends makes a strong friendship in passing the hard but beautiful and meaningful days. Bu Muslimah calls them Laskar Pelangi which is the same as the rainbow warriors in meaning.
